We are an integral part of the Incline Village Community
AAUW Tahoe Nevada partners with many of our local organizations to improve the lives of residents of all ages:
- Incline Education Fund (IEF)
- Rotary Club of Incline Village
- Incline Village Noon Rotary Club
- Incline Village Crystal Bay Community and Business Association (IVCBA)
- Incline Village General Improvement District (IVGID)
- Incline Village Elementary, Middle, and High Schools
- Incline Village Public Library
Here are some specific opportunities for you to get involved
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
AAUW Tahoe Nevada members are actively involved in enhancing STEM education opportunities at Incline Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.
- The goal of the Curiosity Club is to encourage elementary students to look at the world with wonder. This after-school program has a full range of science kits and demonstrations for hands-on learning. We also provide short “curiosity” lessons during lunch for the students who cannot remain after school. For more information and to get involved, please send a message to STEM@tahoenvaauw.org.
- Girls Who Code prepares middle and high school girls for careers in emerging technology, ensuring that they keep in pace with a rapidly changing tech industry. Activities include programming, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). If you have experience in any aspect of technology, we need you. For more information and to get involved, please send a message to STEM@tahoenvaauw.org.
Career Technical Education (CTE)
AAUW Tahoe Nevada’s newest outreach program provides information on Career Technical Education, alternatives to traditional 4-year college degree programs. In partnership with our local Rotary Clubs, these lunch-time programs focus on 2-year associate degrees, certificate programs, training opportunities in the military, and finding apprenticeships. These kinds of non-traditional educational opportunities increasingly can lead to good paying jobs. We are always looking for speakers to share their career knowledge and experiences with high school students. For more information and to get involved, please send a message to CTE@tahoenvaauw.org.
Partnering with our Public Schools
AAUW Tahoe Nevada not only has a very active Book Club, we are very interested in helping struggling readers.
- Read With Me is an organization that provides volunteers to help elementary school students who are reading below grade-level. With as little as a 30 minute per week commitment, you can give a child the one-on-one attention that is needed to improve their reading fluency and comprehension – just by listening to them read, reading along with them, or reading to them, depending on their ability. If you have a little more time to invest, you can help out in the afternoon Reading Club. Reach out to John Gregory and Sharon Schrage at inclinereadwithme@gmail.com if you want more details and are interested in helping.
AAUW Tahoe Nevada partners closely with the Incline Education Fund (IEF) to support students from kindergarten through high school by sharing their time, talents, and professional expertise. AAUW volunteers play a vital role in STEM and enrichment programs across all three Incline public schools.
- The AAUW STEM Team, led by members Laura Durica and Mary Fenelon, provide ongoing support to the Incline Elementary School Makerspace.
- At Incline Middle School, in addition to supporting Girls Who Code, members such as Valerie Kuchulis who contributes her expertise to the Fiber Arts Exploratory, volunteers are active in the school’s hands-on Exploratory Program.
- At Incline High School, our members engage with students through Girls Who Code, CTE presentations, and 1:1 mentorship programs, including HOPA (Hispanic Outreach Personalized Approach) which builds meaningful connections between the school’s Hispanic students and local professionals and PLA (Personalized Learning Approach) which helps students find local internships.
- Looking ahead, AAUW Tahoe Nevada aims to expand math enrichment and launch a reading enrichment program focused on above-grade-level literacy.
Mentoring College Students
Our Scholarship Committee has a mentoring program in place for the AAUW Tahoe Nevada Scholarship Recipients. We are doing all that we can to help these young women succeed! Sometimes they are the first in their family to attend college and need a guide to help them on this new path they are traveling. Maybe they are not sure about what course of study to undertake, or are worried about out being away from home for the first time; having a mentor to answer questions or talk through an issue can be a part of their support system. If you are interested, reach out to scholarship@tahoenvaauw.org and let us know. We will try to match your background, passions and experiences with a mentee of similar interests.
AAUW Tahoe Nevada “Buddies” Program
New members are matched with existing members to learn more about AAUW Tahoe Nevada. This is the perfect opportunity to connect women who are new to the community with other active, engaged women. For more information, contact membership@tahoenvaauw.org.
We are always looking for new volunteer opportunities in our community. If you have ideas, please reach out to president@tahoenvaauw.org.
